Advancing Health Equity & Social Justice
Established in Oakland, the GLB Institute for Health Equity and Social Justice is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to advancing health equity and social justice for communities in the Bay Area and beyond. We strengthen leaders and organizations dedicated to creating lasting systems change.
We equip leaders from under-resourced communities with funding, support, and tools to advance health equity and social justice.
Our values guide how we strengthen leaders and organizations to advance health equity & social justice in every initiative.
We remove structural barriers to the financial, professional, and relational resources needed to disrupt the systemic drivers of inequity.
We view lived experience as a form of expertise and use trust-based approaches that integrate the perspectives of leaders and the communities they serve.
We encourage leaders to own their voice and strengthen their capacity to lead and act in alignment with their values.
We sustain the work of social justice and equity by creating intentional space for leaders to rest, reflect, and recharge.
A History of Impact
Founded by Carol F. Burton, lifelong social justice advocate and seasoned organizational executive, the GLB Institute embodies the belief that talents should serve something greater than oneself.
With decades of experience in housing, public safety, public health, mental and behavioral health, and policy, our team advances health equity and social justice by strengthening the impact of programs, services, and policies for under-resourced communities.
While deeply rooted in the Bay Area for over a decade, we also partner with leaders and organizations outside the region who share our commitment to building health equity and social justice.
Our team combines expertise, experience, and community insight to help leaders and organizations navigate complex challenges while creating meaningful, sustainable change.
